Study Task 01 - Getting to know people

Getting to know people - Task 1

Today we got briefed our first studio brief for PPP and this is what we done in today's lesson.

We all got split up in into group and got given different design agencies to research and these were the questions and answers to them. Enjoy.

Our design agency was Build - wearebuild.com

Who are they?
Build was founded in 2001 by Michael C. Place who is the creative director and Nicky Place (business director), they are also joined by two more designers, Joe Luxton and Sophie James.

Image of their studio. Very Empty. Maybe a new space for me?

Where are they based?
Build are based in a studio in Walthamstow, London

Walthamstow Station

What do they do?
Build Specialises in producing visual identities for creative, design-led clients and their portfolio also incorporates branding, art direction and graphic design. Build has worked for a lot of famous brands and clients including Nike, Virgin America, Song, Made.com and many more.

Work they produced for Nokia

How do they do it?
The build team have extensive experience of production, so this ranges from print, websites & moving images

Stow Brothers work

Company manifesto?
"We help clients rationalise their challenges and verbalise their personality, and no matter what the size of project, it is always our aim to deliver beyond expectation. We firmly believe in working closely and collaboratively with our clients to create relevant, bespoke design solutions." -Build

Conclusion
That was the end of the task, the task wasn't very long so we only had a short space of time to research these question. The company as a whole seems pretty awesome, they produced the style of work that I'm extremely interested in. Their work is mainly illustration and modern based designs. However they also do a lot of moving image work which me as a designer haven't touched upon yet.

Studio Brief 1 - A bit about me 1

Q: When are you happiest?
A: When I’m the happiest has to be when I have my headphones on listening to music especially hearing my favourite band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros!

Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: My greatest fear is the fear of non-existence, as someone with no religious background and belief it’s always a thought hidden away. It’s truly something that no person can fathom or comprehend as non-one can say what happens after death.

Q: What is your happiest memory?
A: My recent happiest memory that I can remember is when I managed to achieve a full time job when my apprenticeship ended, for me it was a foot in the door as a designer.

Q: What was your most embarrassing
A: I had eating another girl’s cake and she ran away crying because it was for her family and not for our class in college…ooops!

Q: What makes you unhappy?
A: Rude people make me unhappy, from people who don’t say please and thank you, to ignorant people who chew with their mouth open. Manners don’t cost anything.

Q: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A: Astronaut & professional football player

Q: What is your guiltiest pleasure?
A: My guilty pleasure has to be watching Emmerdale, used to watch it religiously without fail.

Q: What is you favourite hobby?
A: My recent hobby is digital and film photography as working in London was a great place to take photos of the architecture.

Q: Favourite place
A: I recently went to Krakow in Poland and absolutely loved it there, but my all time favourite place has to be my unconditional love for my bed.

Choosen Typeface

My chosen typeface was Futura, designed by Paul Renner in 1927, starting point for the design was based on classical Roman inscriptional capitals, but was also inspired by Bauhaus. Futura was strictly based on geometric structure; Renner deliberately avoided all references to any handwritten or calligraphy inspirations, which made for a original typeface. Famous brands used by Futura are Redbull, absolute Vodka, Costco, Dominos Pizza and used to be the chosen font of Ikea.

Why did I choose Futura?

The 6 typefaces we could of chosen I categorized them into two sections to narrow down my selection, Serifs and san-serifs which only left Futura and Helvetica left as san-serif fonts. I’m not a lover of serifs type faces because personally they come across too strict and profession and I see serifs as outdated in today’s modern world and don’t fit in with the upcoming designs.
In my background as a digital designer I have become accustomed to using sans serif typefaces. San serifs to me give the impression of modern, clean and crisp features which are used a lot more in digital design.

Studio Brief 1 - A little about me

A little about me...

The reasons for choosing Leeds College of art was to firstly move away and become more independent as an individual. Also I couldn’t help to be influenced by the university league table, so when I saw that LCA ranked top for a specialist University I couldn’t resist. Another reason has to be sitting at a desk from 9-5, eyes burning from the constant stare at the computer screen, so this was a big push to continue my studies. Lastly there are many areas that still need improving i.e. communication, print, presenting skills.

There are many things that I would love to learn at my time at LCA. I would like to have a deeper understanding of typography and the theory behind it. Printing is another thing I need more knowledge in, as I didn’t experiment enough and didn’t have a positive experience with printing in general. Taking care of myself with out any help especially from my mum is another big factor I’d love to achieve! In the summer will be my first time I will experiencing freelancing so I would love to know how I can develop this and take this further into a more permanent position and gain clients. Lastly I would love to be more confident whilst presenting, as when I’m speaking about my work I don’t come across how I feel and experience graphics from within.

What are my strengths? I’m quite confident with most adobe software i.e. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Dreamweaver. The fact that I have industry experience coming into university should hopefully give me a little boost of confidence. Also I’m very efficient with deadlines and handling multiple projects at the same time, as this was a big factor working as a junior designer.

Inspirations? Firstly many people would avoid saying money is their form of inspiration as you would be label ed materialistic but money is a big inspiration for me, I wouldn’t be able to write this blog post with out money for my Mac, Just food for thought. Other things that I’m inspired by is my favourite band Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeroes their music just transforms me to an alternative place in my imagination. Also Grunge design is a style that I heavily appreciate as a designer and Marybeth Rothman is a icon that I look up too on this form of design. The next inspiration I’ve already mentioned about, sitting at a desk from 9-5 is another kick up the bum to work for myself and not to be stuck in a corporate company designing for snobbish marketing teams (it’s quite pretentious of me to say but they aren’t good to work with). Also coming back and forth on the train many times I saw a variety of good(ish) and bad advertisement posters and I always think if I could improvement on them or take inspiration by the thought process.
